The Citizens Three Goals to Nil Man United: Lauren Hemp on target in Manchester City dominant win.

Just as Storm Claudia swept through the northern region the night before, the home side overwhelmed United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Defeats for United

This result signalled consecutive Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to balance league and continental soccer with a thin roster has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the Champions League. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Regrettably for the opposition, they seemed weary from start to finish, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had tried to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided freshness, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the bench was questioned.

City, in opposition, have no similar loading issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since returning from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from Manchester City whose dynamic attack controlled and tore United open with a superb initial 45 minutes performance that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

This placed City firmly in control and had Manchester United all at sea. Before this fixture, United had let in just six in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the wake of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Opening Threats

The warning signs came early when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything in the beginning, taking advantage of the gap left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her passes were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple sorties forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them alternatives in the wings but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, controlled possession, taunting their opponents and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Goals Galore

They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to score. It was City’s seventh header of the season.

They increased their lead with two more goals just before the break. When Rose was able to drive through the center from central defence, the play became spacious for the hosts. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before providing a precise ground pass for Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a rapid change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the space to strike a shot home from outside the box.

Final Period

The primary adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the game. Ex- City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to register a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any team who finished above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding position after nine matches.
