Sam Fender was awarded the Mercury Prize recently in Newcastle

The artist has donated the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to save the Britain's independent music venues.

Fender was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was named the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation assisted venues that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges arising from floods, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The idea that money from performances in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is among several artists to give his award winnings to good deeds.

In they received the trophy in the year 1996 for their record the album, frontman Cocker announced that the act would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her award between several good causes, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a grand to the center, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they needed better apparatus," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

In recent years, the band contributed their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their act, as well as other local music groups.

Also winners that year the group contributed their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"The victory was sufficient," remarked singer the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted somebody else's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had protected two local spots in that region, by bringing them into public stewardship.

The first in Southampton and The Croft in that location were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by a national body and supporters who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
