New research indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
