Her Royal Highness's Annual Festive Service of Carols Spotlights Charity Helpers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will listen to a selection of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians aided by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the former royal to increase availability of musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with awards contributing to instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
